Starter FM is Sydney’s new youth dance radio station
Starter Free Media or Starter FM is a new independent, youth radio station based out of Western Sydney with an aim to champion dance music.
Starter FM was founded by station manager Daniel Warren and a group of passionate young people keen to see dance music back on the airwaves in Sydney. The station will have a focus on Dance, Top 40 and Urban.
It also aims to spotlight musical talent from Western Sydney and Australian in general. “I had always had a keen interest in radio from a young age and that rolled over to when I moved to NSW,” Warren tells Radio Today.
“I did a bit of community radio work on Radio Blue Mountains 89.1 when I was 16 but then moved to Sydney when I turned 18, I looked around for a Dance music station that I could get involved with in Sydney/Western Sydney but found none.
“The closest was FBi (which does a great job in supporting local artists) but wanted a station more connected to Western Sydney with dance music/commercial dance.
Warren says he wants Starter FM to be to Sydney what stations like Kiss FM is to Melbourne, and Fresh 92.7 to Adelaide.
“After launching the station I started finding other like minded people who also had a passion for Dance music and wanted to see a Youth Dance music station in Sydney/Western Sydney which started the push for a narrowcast frequency or DAB+ spectrum.”
The already features shows including BRL (An Australia’s Hip Hop show, covering Australian Hip Hop from all angles) airing at 7pm Thursdays and The Hype (A showcase of the freshest Hip Hop and Club tracks with some of the biggest names in Australia) airing 7pm Saturday Nights.
“We are looking to get revenue through listener supporters (As Kiss FM Melbourne Does) though our Patreon and Gofundme campaigns and local business advertising, Eg, Local Clubs and Bars,” adds Warren.
“We are not a community station, we are just a group of people with a passion for dance music and great sounding radio with open doors for like minded people.”
