ABC Radio Perth Breakfast presenter Russell Woolf dies

Former Editor & Content Director

Long-time ABC Radio presenter Russell Woolf has died.

ABC colleague, radio presenter Geoff Hutchison, made the announcement on ABC Radio Perth this morning saying it had come as a huge shock.

“We have only just learnt of his passing in the last few hours and it’s sinking in,” he said.

“Everyone here at ABC Radio Perth is in shock and trying to make sense of it.

“Russell as you know is a much-loved and much-cherished part of our ABC family and we’re going to battle [to] find words for a while this morning.”

Woolf was the host of the Breakfast program in ABC Radio Perth, and had previously hosted the Drive program. His career with the national broadcaster spanned more than two decades.

WA premier Mark McGown described Woolf as a “radio legend” and said he was deeply saddened to hear of the death.

Woolf’s former Breakfast show co-presenter, Nadia Mitsopoulos, who now hosts Mornings, said on Twitter she was heartbroken.

This morning’s Breakfast program was hosted by Mitsopoulos, who at the time didn’t appear to know the news of Woolf. She opened the program saying she didn’t know how long she’d be in the slot and that Woolf was feeling a little unwell.

My absolute favourite morning radio announcer, have been known to sit in my car to finish listening to his banter, before work. Such a loss. I am so saddened.

I am still in shock since learning of your death along with the rest of Perth Russell and lost for words.

It was an honour and privilege to have grown up with you. Not only were you a terrific classmate but you were also a fantastic and great close friend. It’s a shame we lost touch after school seeing each other only occasionally thereafter. Nevertheless I’ll cherish all the times we had together at school, get togethers, not to mention all those camps, parties and Bar-Mitzvah’s.

My condolences to your family. My heart goes out to them.
