Where will radio’s future stars come from?

Staff Writer

This year’s Radio Today 30 Under 30 Awards are officially done – but don’t worry, they are set to continue next year under new owners AMT, the publishers of Radioinfo.

As a final offering to radio’s rising stars, however, current Radio Today publisher, Jake Challenor, and editor and content director, Vivienne Kelly, pulled together a panel of executive producers from some of the biggest radio shows to talk about the challenges and opportunities ahead.

The panel is hosted by Kelly, who has just a matter of hours left in the Radio Today editor’s chair. She is joined by the EP of Nova 91.9’s Ben & Liam Breakfast show, Nick Marwe; The Christian O’Connell Show’s EP, Tom Martin, from GOLD 104.3; and Zac McLean, Ben Fordham’s EP for 2GB Breakfast.

The trio reveal the best and worst moments in radio as they rose through the ranks to run these prominent programs – whether it was brutal air checks and having their ideas shut down in front of scores of people, or the moment they realised they’d be better off working behind the scenes.

The panel explores how you know if you’d be better off behind the mic or behind the scenes, what skills make for a great EP, and the talent who get it wrong (and right).

They also delve into the mistakes they see young would-be radio stars make, and where tomorrow’s stars might be hiding (and how we can find them).

If you’re a 30 Under 30 winner, a would-be 30 Under 30 winner, or someone who wants to take the next step in your radio career, this panel will help you realise what you need to do now, what you need to do next, and what’s around the corner.
